Cleaning and disinfecting are different tasks. Routine cleaning removes dirt and many germs from household surfaces. When disinfection is needed, the right product and its directions matter more than a strong smell or a homemade mixture.
Start with routine cleaning
Use a cleaner suited to the surface and remove visible dirt before applying a disinfectant, unless the product label gives different instructions. Pay attention to frequently touched areas such as handles, light switches and bathroom fixtures. A regular room-by-room routine helps you keep track of what has been cleaned.
Choose a disinfectant by its label
Check the EPA registration number, approved surfaces and the specific organisms listed on the product. Registration does not mean every product is suitable for every pathogen or material. Use the EPA’s disinfectant information and product lists to understand the label and select a product for the intended use.
Allow the required contact time
The label states how long a treated surface must remain wet. Follow that contact time and any instructions for rinsing food-contact surfaces. Do not assume a quick spray followed immediately by a dry cloth provides the stated disinfection.
Use one product as directed
Do not mix cleaning products or disinfectants. In particular, never combine bleach with other cleaners. Follow the label for dilution, ventilation, protective equipment and storage. When dilution is required, CDC recommends room-temperature water unless the product label says otherwise. Keep products away from children and pets. See the CDC’s household cleaning and disinfection guidance.
Match the method to the material
Electronics, upholstery, natural stone and coated finishes may need different care. Read the item manufacturer’s instructions and the cleaner’s surface restrictions before use. Do not substitute vinegar or another household ingredient for a disinfectant with a suitable label claim.
Plan your cleaning visit
Tell Your Bright Home about delicate surfaces, product sensitivities and any specific cleaning priorities when requesting an estimate. Ask which tasks are included rather than assuming every cleaning appointment includes disinfection.
