Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions First
Find the care label beneath the cushions or on the furniture frame. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the fabric, finish and removable covers before using a product. A cover that unzips is not automatically machine-washable. If instructions are missing or unclear, ask the manufacturer or an upholstery specialist rather than guessing from the fabric’s appearance.
Inspect loose seams, fading, worn areas and existing stains. Stop if the material is fragile or damaged. Test only a product expressly suitable for the material, following its label and the furniture maker’s directions.
Remove Loose Crumbs and Dust
Where permitted by the manufacturer, use a suitable vacuum attachment on accessible surfaces and crevices. Work gently around seams and decorative details. Remove loose cushions only when they are designed to be moved, and avoid forcing a vacuum nozzle into the fabric.
Routine vacuuming removes loose debris. It is different from extraction, stain treatment or washing upholstery. If you are arranging a YBH house-cleaning visit, discuss any ordinary furniture vacuuming beforehand rather than assuming a specialist sofa service is included.
Handle Spills According to the Care Label
For a fresh spill, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid scrubbing, soaking cushions or combining household chemicals. Do not assume a carpet cleaner is suitable for upholstery. Leather, coated materials and delicate fabrics can require different care.
Persistent staining, odors or unknown contamination should be assessed by an independent specialist. Describe the material and any products already applied. Ask what results are realistic, how the item will dry and which areas may remain marked; cleaning does not repair worn or damaged fabric.
